McLaughlin College Fellows and Students Present

"The Mid-Point in York's First Century: Perspectives on Sustainability and the Future of Humankind." David V. J Bell, Professor Emeritus and Former Dean, Faculty of Environmental Studies, will present this talk as part of York’s 50th Anniversary Master’s Lecture Series.

The mid point of York’s first century coincides with the mid-point of the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development [UNDESD 2005 - 2014]. This is an ideal time to reflect on the educational ideas and socio-political circumstances of York’s founding in order to focus on the contrasting – and critically urgent – sustainability challenges and opportunities of the next 50 years. I will talk about the role of education and York University in helping society develop an appropriate culture of sustainability that would allow humankind to flourish beyond the next century.

'Changing Climate for Business' is a workshop designed for Schulich alumni and current MBA students to discuss practical ways to combat climate change in the workplace. Sponsored by the British High Commission, the event will feature a panel discussion with participants representing several perspectives on climate change, including consultancies, government, financial institutions and internal change managers. A keynote presentation will then be followed a networking reception to provide attendees the chance to share ideas on combating climate change and take advantage of the networking opportunities to be found in an mixed crowd of speakers, Schulich alumni and current MBA students. The cost of attendance is fully sponsored by the British High Commission and a spread of drinks and snacks will be served at the reception.

March 2009 - Keele campus undergraduate residences compete to reduce their carbon footprint.

Students will do their part to minimize their energy consumption and compete for weekly and monthly sustainability-themed awards. Residence Environmental Ambassadors at each location will help build awareness, educate, and ultimately change behaviour. The Res Race to Zero complements York's 5-year energy plan which includes a $40 million investment to reduce consumption by 25%. Modifying behaviour is an essential component of reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally any savings will be invested in improvement of quality of life of residence students on campus. 1. 'The Role of the Private Sector in Development - A Value Chain Perspective, Farouk Jiwa presents

In another installment of the Sustainability Speaker Series, Farouk Jiwa, Senior Regional Technical Adviser of the Economic Development Unit for CARE USA, will discuss CARE's experience in community economic development in selected projects from across Africa, Asia and Latin America. The lecture will highlight some of the key successes achieved through building strategic partnerships with the private sector as well as some of the challenges faced by the organization. This makes a case for the value chain approach being adopted by an increasing number of international development organizations, which seek a real win-win-win synergy between poor rural communities, NGOs and the private sector. 2. Green Drinks North York

Taking place the first Thursday of every month Green Drinks North York, like Green Drinks Toronto, is a networking series which sees environmental professionals, students and other like-minded people mingle over drinks in an informal setting. Though this version of the Green Drinks series is newer than that of Toronto, it provides an alternative event that is much closer to the university. RSVPs are appreciated but not mandatory. 3. MBA Insight 2009

Presented by the GBC and General Mills, this event creates a platform from which current students can connect with recent alumni who are currently working in their preferred industries. Come out to attend two out of six different industry/specialization panels, discuss career opportunities and expand your network. With an afternoon panel dedicated to the sustainability sector, this event promises to strengthen the connections between recent alumni and current students. Business attire is required and all students and alumni are welcome to attend. Taking place the third Wednesday of every month, Green Drinks Toronto is a networking series which sees environmental professionals, students and other like-minded people mingle over drinks in an informal setting. With the Toronto version having started in June 2005, the events have attracted hundreds of environmental professionals and interested residents to the monthly gatherings, often with a different crowd showing up each time.
