The Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED), in McGill’s Faculty of Engineering, is seeking a scholar to spend six months in residence at McGill’s Faculty of Engineering to participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary research and teaching. TISED’s 2014-2015 Scholars-in-Residence program supports scholars and experts to conduct collaborative research with an emphasis on advancing sustainability in one of the following areas: (a) energy resources and efficiency; (b) urban development; and (c) urban transportation. The selected Scholar would be engaged in policy-focused research that will enable significant advances in sustainability in the above areas. Two postdoctoral positions in cloud microphysics and airborne measurement

Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions in Cloud Physics and Severe Weather Section at Environment Canada, Toronto.  One position is specifically focused on cloud microphysical analysis with emphasis on the results of High Ice Water Content field campaign on measurements of microphysical properties of the mesoscale tropical convective storms. The other position is focused on airborne cloud instrumentation:  probes calibrations techniques, instrumentation development, accuracy of measurements, participation in field campaigns and data collection.

The York Institute for Health Research (YIHR) is a university-based organized research unit that fosters health research. YIHR facilitates, supports, and conducts research under broad health themes through the lenses of community engagement, interdisciplinarity, internationality, multi-method approaches and policy relevance. YIHR is looking to hire a Research Assistant to ensure a gender lens is incorporated throughout YIHR activities, providing input into projects, institute development and dissemination activities. The Research Assistant position will involve working under the direction of YIHR Director and Project Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

-      Assists the Project Coordinator in bringing a gender lens to projects, events and new applications. Raises issues to the Project Coordinator and PI, as necessary.

-      Research and writing related to YIHR institutional reports and research projects.

-      Searches for funding opportunities and assists PI in developing new applications.

-      Assists the Project Coordinator in bringing together interdisciplinary research teams, developing a gender lens into projects, advising researchers on university and funding processes and policies, and ensuring application deadlines are met.

-      Coordinating YIHR activities including meetings, student events andproject activities.

-      Support YIHR and research project knowledge mobilization includingYIHR facebook page, twitter account, newsletter and podcasts, as well as developing and coordinating YIHR seminars and speakers related to gender and health.

-      Assists the Project Coordinator with administrative tasks.

1 Year Postdoctoral Visitor in Policy, Sustainability & Education

 1 Year Postdoctoral Visitor in Policy, Sustainability & Education, 
York University, Toronto and Lakehead University, Thunder Bay

 A one-year cross-appointed SSHRC funded postdoctoral visitor (PDV) is now available in the Institute for Research and Innovation in Sustainability at York University and the Centre for Place and Sustainability Studies at Lakehead University. 

The post-doctorate appointment will be joining the PEASE project (Policy Enactments and Sustainability Education). The focus of this project is a study of contemporary enactments of sustainability and policy in higher education and schooling in Ontario. The appointment will be joining an interdisciplinary faculty research team with a focus on sustainability and education. They will conduct primary interview and archival research on situated policy enactments in specified educational contexts, support and oversee a group of active researchers (masters and doctorate students), contribute to pan university sustainability discussions and educational initiatives, publish articles, update web-based resources and seek funds for allied projects and proposals. 

The successful applicant will have completed a Ph.D. within the last 4 years and have experience of academic leadership in areas associated with Environmental Sustainability, Education and Policy. This could include, but is not limited to, doctorates in environmental studies, educational studies, policy studies and Science and Technology Studies.

This is a one-year position, continuation of which is contingent upon funding. The PDV will be based at York University in Toronto. There is possibility of being based at Lakehead University, with travel between both institutions expected. The salary range is $35,000-48,000 per year plus benefits, depending on level of experience.

Applicants should provide the following materials: a current CV; a statement (no more than 500 words) outlining their current research projects, how they relate to issues of policy, sustainability and education, and the work that they would undertake as a postdoctoral fellow with PEASE. Both documents should be provided in PDF format. The name and contact details of two academic referees should also be supplied.

Deadline to apply is January 6th, 2014. Interview are expected to take place the week of January 20th, with the postdoctoral visitor appointed commencing by March 1st.

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Director of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Sustainability (IRIS) for a term of five years, to begin July 1, 2014.

IRIS is a University-wide organized research unit that serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research on sustainability, broadly defined, across all Faculties at York. IRIS carries out research into diverse aspects of sustainability and promotes practical sustainability solutions that encompass environmental, social and economic considerations at local, regional and global scales. The Institute is a leader in creating a culture of sustainability within and beyond York University through engagement in practical, collaborative and interdisciplinary research and innovation that drives change. IRIS is currently seeking an application for a new Senate charter to further advance this mandate and build on past success. The incoming Director of IRIS will have an opportunity to provide leadership in advancing a renewed strategic vision for the Institute and defining priorities within it.

Applicants are expected to be members of the full-time faculty at York University and to have a distinguished and active record of sustainability-related research and scholarship. Demonstrated ability to lead and enable collaborative, interdisciplinary research initiatives is required, as are strong communication and networking skills. The Director is expected to provide leadership for the Institute's research activities, to develop and secure external funding, and to continue to build the local and national reputation of IRIS. He or she is also responsible for overseeing management and administration of the financial, organizational, and academic activities of the Institute. The successful applicant will receive an administrative stipend and the appropriate course load reduction as stipulated by the relevant Collective Agreement. John Bousfield Distinguished Visitorship In Planning

The Graduate Planning Program at the University of Toronto invites applications from accomplished practitioners and scholars who wish to contribute to the teaching and research activities of the Program. Applications are sought for Winter term, 2014 (which begins January 6) for visitors interested in teaching a graduate level course on some aspect of Environmental Planning.   We are particularly interested in visitors who have expertise in Planning for Climate Change, Cities the Environment and Resilience, or Environmental Impact Assessment. The Visitorship also supports research activities and visitors typically give at least one lecture or talk open to the public as well as members of the department. Specific activities will be negotiated with the successful application.

ABOUT THE VISITORSHIP:

The John Bousfield Distinguished Visitorship in Planning was established through a major donation to and a matching grant by the University of Toronto. The Visitorship honours John Bousfield, a distinguished Canadian urban planner now in his 60th year of professional practice, and enables the Planning Program to bring to the University accomplished individuals who can teach, give public lectures and participate in collaborative research projects on issues important to the field of planning.

The Bousfield position is intended to offer the visitors an opportunity for research, writing and reflection, while also enhancing the learning experience of students in the Program in Planning, providing diverse and innovative perspectives on contemporary planning issues and enhancing the relations between the Planning Program and the community at large.

Located in one of the most diverse cities in North America, the Planning Program offers its students a dynamic, interdisciplinary blend of practical knowledge and critically engaged theory. ELIGIBILITY, EXPECTATIONS AND HOW TO APPLY:

The Planning Program is seeking applications from practitioners and scholars who have substantial planning experience in public, private, non-profit or community organizations, in local, national or international venues. The program especially encourages applications from those whose experiences and viewpoints are underrepresented within planning.

The Planning Program can support a one semester visitorship with a stipend of up to CDN $12,000, depending on the duration and intensity of the period in residence at the University.

Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Sustainable Neighbourhoods

The University of British Columbia is searching for a Post-doctoral Research Fellow with experience in the emerging fields of regenerative design and sustainability assessment methodologies – particularly as they relate to neighbourhood development – to work as part of a team including several faculty members affiliated with our Regenerative Neighbourhoods Project, their students and other post-doctoral fellows. The supervisor of the successful Post-doctoral Fellow applicant will be Dr John Robinson, Director of the CIRS research program.

The ideal candidate for this one-year program (renewable to a maximum of two years) would hold a recent (graduated within the last year) PhD in Architecture, Engineering or a social science field related to community or urban sustainability. Of particular interest is expertise in sustainability assessment tools and frameworks.
