Community Forum on Pollution and Action – Aamjiwnaang First Nation

The Health and Environment Committee of the Aamjiwnnaang First Nation,
in partnership with several researchers, will host an innovative and
inspired "Community Forum on Pollution and Action" in Sarnia on
February 10 and 11, 2011.  The Forum will consist of speakers,
workshops and break-out sessions focused on community mobilization and
knowledge-sharing for Aamjiwnaang community members, including youth,
neighboring First Nations, and allies in relation to environmental
justice organizing around pollution, environmental health and legal
remedies.

The event will include a keynote address by George Poitras of Mikisew
Cree First Nation on Mobilizing Indigenous Youth for Environmental
Justice.

When is it??  The Forum will begin on Thursday, February 10th at 5:30
pm and will end on Friday, February 11th at 4:45 pm.

Who is invited??  Community-members from Aamjiwnaang First Nation,
Walpole Island, Stony and Kettle Point, indigenous leaders and youth
activists, advocates for environmental justice, municipal and regional
environmental health authorities, and interested policy-makers from
all levels of government.

The Friday morning workshop sessions are geared primarily towards the
Aamjiwnaang community and the nearby First Nations. Limited
participation of interested ‘outsiders’ will be facilitated as space
allows. Please indicate your interest on the registration form.

How much does it cost?  There will be no cost to members of the
Aamjiwnaang community and the nearby First Nations. For participants
from outside these communities, we will be selling tickets to the
Thursday night dinner and keynote at the door. There will be no set
price; a donation of $20 is suggested.

Who is organizing it? ?A collaborative research team, supported by the
Aamjiwnaang Health and Environment Committee, Professor Dayna Nadine
Scott at York University, and several other researchers. For more

IRIS Speaker Series Presents… COP16 Debrief Panel

When: Monday, January 17, 1 pm

Where: Student Centre Room 313


The event will explore the findings from this year’s COP, while critically analyzing the value of the annual conference.

York PhD candidate, Jacqueline Medalye, attended COP16 in Cancun, Mexico, this past December, and will provide firsthand insight into what went on at the global forum. The panel will also draw from other key researchers, including Kaz Higuchi, Brett Rhyno, Jose Etcheverry and Anders Sandberg. Open discussion, with contribution from the audience, will be encouraged.

Design, Installation and Management of Rain Water Harvesting Systems

When: February 9, 2011, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Where: Earth Rangers Building, The Living City Campus at Kortright, Vaughan, ON

Cost: $300 + HST (includes lunch and a copy of the Guidelines and Design Tool Software)

This one-day course will focus on the regulatory and technical aspects of RWH systems for both residential and ICI (Industrial, Commercial, Institutional) buildings. The course is targeted at contractors, builders, designers, architects, regulators or anyone interested in learning about the design, installation and management of RWH systems. Participants attending the course will be provided with a copy of the Ontario Guidelines for Residential Rainwater Harvesting Systems and a copy of the Rainwater Harvesting Design Tool software. Earthlings Screening with Georges Laraque

The York University Vegetarian Environmentalist Group is hosting a singular bilingual event at York University.
 
The French film "Terriens" narrated by Georges Laraque will be presented in room YH 204 on the Glendon Campus (Bayview and Lawrence). Georges Laraque will be joining us and a question and answer period (in French) will follow the film.
 
The following day, Thursday November 25th, the English version of the film ("Earthlings", narated by Joaquin Pheonix) will be presented at Keele Campus, Vari Hall B at 7pm.
