Canada Green Building Council Annual Gala

Where: Artscape Wychwood Barns - 601 Christie Street (at St.Clair), Toronto

When: October 21, 2010

This event will have a presentation by Joe Lobko, who is the Achitect of the Artscape Wychwood Barns Revitalization Project as well as entertainment by the Daniel Barnes Quartet. All proceeds will go to the Greater Toronto Chapter of the Canada Green Building council to delivering education, training programs and networking events.

York’s Sustainability Fair

Where: Vari Hall, York University

When: October 28th, 2010

Come and learn about what sustainability related clubs there are on campus. Clubs will be tabling in Vari Hall to discuss upcoming events, volunteer opportunities and other initiatives. There were also be workshops regarding sustainability initiatives and getting organized as well as a session for students to give input into the President's Sustainability Council's annual report.


ARC 2010

Where: World Trade and Convention Center, Halifax

When: October 27-29, 2010

This event will be focusing on how resource and industrial development contributes to social and economic growth. Although this has benefited particular communities, it has left others with serious social and environmental burdens. Communities are left with contaminated sites, brownfields, deteriorating industrial landscapes, impoverished forest and non-forest landscapes as well as damaged waterways.

ARC 2010 is a space where these problems and solutions will be discussed by individuals and teams attending this October.


Geology Matters 2010 Conference

Where: Westin Hotel, Halifax

When: October 25-26, 2010

The Department of Natural Resources will be co-hosting the Geology Matters 2010 Conference which will focus on geoscience, municiple planning, geohazards, health and safety, geohertiage, and economic growth. There will also be a discussion surrounding the management of Nova Scotia's resources as well as its reclamation.

This two day event will include presentations from the Department of Natural Resources, guest lecturers, industry staff and more.


The YU Free Press is Seeking Submissions

When: Submissions will be accepted until January 22, 2010

The YU Free Press will be accepting submissions for their latest issue which will be focused on Feminist themes through women's experiences.

A variety of themes will be explored however there is a focus on resistance, and the lived experiences of women of colour, Indigenous women, women with disabilities and queer women.

Leading Change: The Role of Applied Colleges in Sustainable Development

Where: MacDonald Heaslip Hall, Sheridan College, Oakville

This presentation will be held by the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning and the Oakville Sustainability Initiative. The goal of this presentation is to try and establish common ground for a sustainable movement and have academic institutions become leaders, embedding sustainability into our institutions and organizations.


Introduction to LEED:Rating Systems and Credentials

Leed rating systems are international benchmarks for the design, operation and construction of high performance work buildings. In a presentation by David Rezmovitz questions regarding LEED systems will be analyzed. These questions will include:  What are LEED rating systems? How does a building get certified? What are LEED credentials? How does someone become accredited? What is involved in the design and construction of a green building?


Eat Em’ to Save Em’: Food System Diversity, and the Story of Ontario’s Rare Breed Farmers

Where: HNES 281, York University

When: October 7th, 12:45 pm

The Faculty of Environmental Studies will be showcasing work created by Alexis Esseltine, a Masters of Environmental Studies student. There will a viewing of her documentary on food system diversity and Ontario farmers.

Come and meet Alexis, discuss the documentary and enjoy some coffee and tea.


Greenest Student

When: The contest deadline is October 18th

Students have the opportunity to enter their 'green resolutions' to a panel of judges to showcase their innovative and creative environmental ideas.

The contest is being hosted by ThinkGreenLiveClean.com, which is a student-run website for students showcasing environmental news. The first prize is an Ipad and Ipad case.  The only requirement is an active University e-mail account.
