Biography
Arlene Gould is a design management educator, researcher and consultant who has been championing the economic and social value of design for over twenty years. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at York University, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in design management. She is also the Coordinator of the design management certificate program at Ryerson University.

Arlene is a member of the Executive Board of Sustainable Buildings Canada, and Strategic Director for Ontario’s Design Industry Advisory Committee (DIAC), a think tank and research group established in 2001.

She received her MBA at London Business School in the United Kingdom where she was active in the first design management unit to be established at a graduate business school. Arlene is a member of the Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).

Research Interests
In her recent research, Arlene has worked with faculty in the Schulich School of Business to organize and co-manage an ongoing case study research project called “Design for Sustainability”. The project engages graduate students in business, environmental studies and design to explore how Canadian SMEs are using design strategies to improve environmental performance and competitiveness. Two series of “Design for Sustainability” case studies have been published on the IRIS web site. The cases have also been published in Corporate Knights magazine.

For the Design Industry Advisory Committee, she authored a landmark study on design capability in Ontario (Design Matters: DIAC Design Industry Study 2004).

Her current research work is focused on designing for sustainability and demonstrating the economic value of design in Canada.
